Pop star Wei loves her foreign husband

   lovely and cute Wei Wei

By Xiao Zhang, Shanghai Star. 2000-08-18

WEI Wei is a gentle wife, a caring mother and above all, a happy woman.

Everyone who has listened to her songs will surely like her immediately, not only for her Carpenter-like and magnetic voice, but also for her exotic-looking face and long hair.

Wei Wei established herself in the field of the Chinese pop music early in the 1990s. Her critically acclaimed repertoire ranges widely from songs with a country theme to celebration-theme songs.

Besides her career as a pop singer, Wei is also known for marrying a Swede.

Calling him "the father of my sons," Wei Wei appears quite attached to him, not only in feeling, but also in soul.

Wei Wei got to know 55-year-old Smith in 1992 when she sang a song at the Beijing National Cultural Palace. After the show in the spotlight, she was greeted by him, a stranger to her at that time. "I couldn't see his face, because he was in the dark while I was on the stage, so I just saw a tall figure approaching me."

This figure has become her husband two years later. But she didn't seem to impress him greatly at the first glance. "I thought that she grew a little big, but she did have a good voice," recalled Smith later.

But since then, their co-operation has begun and Smith often writes songs for Wei Wei.

Smith's candidness and honesty at last won the heart of the girl 25 years younger than he.

"I married Michael," said Wei Wei, "but I was told that I lost a lot because I could have married a better-to-do man or official working in the government, but I have never regretted it."

He was a great help to her, not only in her life but also in her career. "He was willing to do everything for me," said Wei Wei. "Sometimes he even does the cooking like a housewife." Their dinner table often has both Chinese and Western style food.

But Smith's favourite food is neither KFC nor hamburger or pizza, but Chinese dumplings.

Their marital life is mainly spiced with two things: their careers and their three lovely children.

Regarding his wife to be among the world's top 10 pop singers, Smith always encourages his wife to challenge life and herself every day. He organized several big shows for Wei Wei. "You should become world famous," he said, "you have the voice and talent."

Last week, Wei Wei planned a recital at the Shanghai Grand Theatre, organized by the theatre, but she was not quite successful at the rehearsal out of tiredness and nervousness. At the backstage lobby, Wei Wei crouched on the sofa, in pain. But Smith came up to her and whispered, "you are still one of the best singers I have ever heard."

Aged respectively 6, 4 and 2 years, their three boys are another source of the joy to Wei Wei.

Although the family moved to Beijing in 1997, the three children are getting their schooling in Sweden, "because Sweden has a better schooling system there," said Wei Wei.

Wei Wei looks more feminine and gentle these years, maybe she has several reasons for that. But definitely, the most important one is that she has four men around her, her husband and three sons.
